Walking the Tightrope: Balancing OR Access and Hospital Capacity

Randy Heiser, SHC President, presented a full-day session at the 2014 OR Manager Conference that was held in Long Beach, CA on September 17-19, 2014. Mr. Heiser’s session topic was Walking the Tightrope: Balancing OR Access and Hospital Capacity. This session described real-world examples of managing unit beds, ICU beds, budgets, staffing, and other constraints in order to increase OR volume and reduce cost per case. Mr. Heiser provided innovative block allocation strategies and tactics in keeping with Capacity Management Principles. Learning objectives for the session included

  • Understand all the constraints on increasing surgical volume
  • Identify how to balance resources and OR access
  • Learn how other hospitals have managed capacity
